DUBAI: The Islamic festival of Eid Al Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is one of the most sacred occasions in the Muslim calendar. The celebration commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s unwavering devotion to God and his willingness to sacrifice his son. Muslims around the world mark the day by offering special prayers, performing animal sacrifices (Qurbani), and distributing meat to the needy, friends, and family.
The date of Eid Al Adha is determined by the lunar Islamic calendar and falls on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, the final month. The beginning of Dhul Hijjah is announced upon the sighting of the crescent moon. As the Islamic calendar is lunar-based, Eid dates shift approximately 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar.
This year, Hajj – the annual pilgrimage to Makkah – will commence on Wednesday, June 4, 2025. The Day of Arafat, the most important day of the pilgrimage and the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah, will be observed on Thursday, June 5. The following day, Friday, June 6, will be Eid Al Adha for many countries including Saudi Arabia. However, countries where the moon was not sighted on May 27 will mark the beginning of Dhul Hijjah on May 29 and celebrate Eid Al Adha on Saturday, June 7.
India is set to celebrate Eid Al Adha 2025 on Saturday, June 7, contingent upon local moon sightings. Authorities in the country anticipated the crescent moon for Dhul Hijjah to appear on the evening of Wednesday, May 28. As the moon was not visible that evening, the first day of Dhul Hijjah will fall on Thursday, May 29.
Consequently, Eid Al Adha, observed on the 10th day of Dhul Hijjah, will be marked across India on Saturday, June 7. The festival is expected to be observed with prayers held in mosques and open grounds, followed by the ritual animal sacrifice in accordance with Islamic tradition. Indian Muslims traditionally use this occasion to donate to the poor, prepare special meals, and gather with family and friends for celebrations that may last up to three days.
Pakistan will observe Eid Al Adha 2025 on Saturday, June 7, following the official announcement made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. During a meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday, May 27, the committee confirmed that the Zil Hajj (Dhul Hijjah) moon was not sighted anywhere in the country. Supporting this, zonal moon sighting committees across cities including Karachi and Lahore also reported no confirmed sightings.
According to committee chairman Maulana Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, the first day of Zil Hajj 1446 AH will be Thursday, May 29, and Eid ul Adha will be celebrated nationwide on Saturday, June 7. The Pakistan Meteorological Department had earlier predicted that the age of the moon by sunset on May 27 would be approximately 11 hours and 34 minutes, reducing the likelihood of visibility. In line with the tradition, Pakistani Muslims will commemorate the occasion with early morning congregational prayers and the symbolic sacrifice of animals, followed by charitable giving and festive meals.
Malaysia has officially declared that Eid Al Adha 2025 will be celebrated on Saturday, June 7. The nation’s religious authorities confirmed that the crescent moon marking the beginning of Dhul Hijjah was not sighted on Tuesday, May 27. As a result, the first of Dhul Hijjah will begin on Thursday, May 29.
With Eid observed on the 10th day of this Islamic month, Malaysian Muslims will celebrate the occasion on June 7. The festival is a national holiday and is widely observed across the country with prayer gatherings, ritual sacrifices, and public events. The meat from the Qurbani is distributed among family, friends, and the less fortunate, in line with Islamic teachings of generosity and community support. The government typically issues specific guidelines for animal slaughter and meat distribution to ensure proper hygiene and religious compliance.
Brunei
Brunei will join several other countries in celebrating Eid Al Adha on Saturday, June 7. The announcement came after the country’s moon sighting committee reported no visibility of the Dhul Hijjah crescent on May 27. Accordingly, the first day of the Islamic month will be observed on Thursday, May 29.
This sets the date for Eid Al Adha on the 10th day, which will fall on Saturday, June 7. Brunei, where Islam is the official religion, marks Eid Al Adha as a major religious and public occasion. Residents participate in early morning congregational prayers, followed by animal sacrifices carried out in designated areas. The celebration is also an opportunity for families to come together and for citizens to contribute to charitable causes, especially those that support the underprivileged.
